Answer
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and what is the difference between Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Japanese Ju Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was created by Grand Masters Carlos and Helio Gracie from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It focuses on real street fighting situations and self defense.

BJJ stands for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Japanese Ju Jitsu comes from Japan, of course. Like many old and traditional martial arts, it is full of beautiful and artistic techniques. unfortunately it does not work very well when used in a real fight.

What are the benefits of practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Does it work for women?

Apart from learning how to defend yourself effectively against any aggressor no matter the size, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an excellent activity as it builds and/or increases self confidence. When you train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you are exercising every muscle of your body including your brain.

As for WOMEN, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is considered the best form of real self defense against a rape attack. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu work because of BODY MECHANICS not strength. During most attacks on women a victim will end up in a bottom position. But in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu this is considered a very favorable position to effectively attack and finish the aggressor or disable the attacker to get and get away safely.

Do I need to be fit, young and very athletic to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

No you don't. Because the key to correct Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Self Defense is to learn how to use BODY MECHANICS and leverage. You do not need strength or agility to execute a technique.
There is a saying in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: If you are using strength to apply a technique that means you do not know that technique.

Why Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is so different from other traditional martial arts?

Easy answer: because it works.

Mixed Martial Arts fighting events started in Brazil many years ago
(called Vale Tudo there). It was later copied and reproduced in USA under the name of UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), and after that in Japan (called Pride). Now many others popping up everywhere. The competitions clearly showed the world that you need to know some ground fighting system if you want to be effective in a real fight.

When these kind of competitions, started it was very interesting to watch pure martial art one-style fighters, example karate fighter vs. a wing chun fighter, Taekwondo vs. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu etc. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu always won so  everybody realized the importance of knowing how to fight on the ground. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu always won.

I studied several years of Muay Thai and I feel confident about my fight skills why should I learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

I consider Muay Thai to be the most effective stand up fighting system... however statistics say that 80% of street fights end up on the ground... if you end up on the ground during a street fight, with your opponent mounting you and unloading punches on your face , what are you going to do? Do you know how to get out of such a situation?

Why do you say that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a proven fighting system?

Decades of Mixed martial arts, no rules fighting events, and everything goes fighting competitions have proven it.

Why do I need to wear a Kimono/Gi/Uniform to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was created by Grand Masters Carlos and Helio Gracie as a scientific self defense system to work in real street fight situations not in sport a competition. In a realistic street fight attack your aggressor will wear some kind of clothing. Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches you how to use your opponent clothing and turn it into a lethal weapon. To train these techniques hundreds of times we need to wear strong clothing that wont break/rip after 1 week.

The gi serves as a teaching tool for developing a strong grip, balance, and control. Fighting with the gi requires a high level of precision and attention to detail; two tools essential for good Jiu-Jitsu.

What is the difference between GRACIE Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and general SPORT Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? Which one is better?

Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was created for self defense, as it works using BODY MECHANICS and leverage and not strength to really allow even a small person to be able to win against a much bigger or heavier aggressor.

SPORT Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an evolution from its traditional and original version. As many Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academies opened all over Brazil, there was a need for competitions. Unfortunately these competitions were originally created with weight categories and time limits allowing competitors to win by points. Because of these rules, athletes only training for SPORT competition developed a game based on gaining points stall the round wait for the time to end and win by points instead of submitting.

So there is a big difference between the 2 ways of training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Which one is better? The answer is up to you, if you want to compete in a sporting event then you need to train the SPORT version. If you care about street fighting and self defense then you need to train the original version.

What is the difference between Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and other ground fighting systems like Judo, Submission wrestling or general grappling?

Judo is an Olympic sport created by Jigoro Kano, a Japanese Ju Jitsu expert, around 1900 and 1905.
Submission Wrestling / Grappling is a sport usually practiced on the
ground, where you can win by points or submission. It is very similar to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu except it is practiced without a kimono and therefore limited to much fewer techniques.

Jiu-Jitsu Philosophy

Jiu-Jitsu means "gentle art" It is uniquely adaptable for all ages, athletic abilities and temperaments.

Self-defense situations are commonly broken down into four ranges: Kicking, Boxing, Clinching/Takedown, Ground/Grappling, with the understanding being that 90% of all self-defense situations typically end up on the ground.. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the single martial art which incorporates the study of ALL four distances, Knowing how to thoughtfully control your opponent without being harmed or having to harm your opponent is the uniquely essential self-defense skill taught by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (this is especially important to caring parents who want their children to be able to control a situation without resorting to hitting). Having this skill, along with the striking skills, gives more control over any situation that should arise. This attitude of thoughtful control and training for all types of real world self-defense situations is what distinguishes Jiu-Jitsu from Arts such as Tae Kwon Do, Judo and other types of Karate.

Jiu-Jitsu students are required to exercise both their bodies and their minds. Because the Martial Arts give specific attention to both elements, they differ from most other sports and physical activities which usually focus on purely physical training.

Serious Martial Arts students believe that the Martial Arts are not about fighting but living. The principles the students learn in the Martial Arts provide guidance on how to act outside the training hall. In the end, Martial Arts can produce a myriad of both tangible and intangible benefits for students. Studies have shown that many of those who practice Martial Arts differ from the general public in that they show a lower level of anxiety, an increased sense of responsibility, and a higher level of self-esteem.

How does one get rank? how hard is it?

There are standards to be met: in order to be a blue belt, you have to be able to 'hang ' with the blue belts, and the same is true for each belt level. The Best analogy i can think of to describe the ranking system for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is College:

Blue belt (With More than one year experience) :: Associates Degree By this time you have anywhere from one to two years in, you are versed in all the basic movements & Concepts, and ready to assist in coaching students.

Purple Belt :: Bachelor's Degree : At this level you know most all of the techniques needed to be very proficient. You are qualified to tech on your own - Under direction of a Black Belt, May award stripes within belt levels. There is not much difference in the number of techniques a purple belt knows and the number of Techniques a black belt knows; the difference is in the ability to use them more effectively in real situation, and in more complicated sequence.

Brown Belt :: Graduate Student : At this point, you're in the master's program. This level is all about polishing your technique and become a black belt.

Black Belt :: Master's Degree :You're a Full Instructor Now, with the respect you deserve, you've got the credentials through proper educations & experience. <BR>Black Belt (7th -8th Degree ):: Doctorate : Only the most dedicated individuals achieve this honorable level, so few that one can only speculate as what must be done to achieve it.
