Denton BJJ Belt System

For adults learning studying regularly under an instructor's supervision - about 6 to 8 hours a week let's say:

White to Blue, about 1 to 2 years
Blue to Purple, about 2 to 3 years
Purple to Brown, about 2 to 3 years
Brown to Black, about 2 to 3 years

It is possible however to speed up the process by training more often and/or taking many private lessons.

Between belts there are 4 sublevels, these are white stripes that are usually applied by the instructor or trainer on your belt end.

Belts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are different from belts in Judo, Karate or other martial arts. The color is different and they have a black 10 cm tip on it where usually stripes will be applied. This stripe is the overall goal of the student to become a Black Belt.

Usually a black belt is never issued to a student under 18; often, even if the student qualifies for it, he may need to wait until he is 21 to receive his black belt.

Do I need a Wrestling background, or be athletic to do this sport?

NO, not at all BJJ is designed for the smaller person in mind, and the use of leverage to help control the movement of the opponent.

DentonBJJ wants all students to use all of there skills from all sports to help them learn how to move on the ground, and follow there natural body reaction. With the natural body movement and skilled training the hurdles will seem smaller to overcome.

Is training safe?

Student safety is a primary concern during all classes. The completion of the Fundamentals curriculum reduces the possibility of injury to a minimal level. The practice of DentonBJJ is safety, and technique. Kirk Gibson’s teaching methods constantly emphasize the importance of keeping students out of harm’s way. Accidents may happen, however, lack of seriousness during training and the resultant careless application of technique or counter-technique contribute greatly to injury. Careless practice is disrespectful toward you and your sparing buddy.

Before two competitors are set to fight or grapple each has to understand the rules to dis-engage or stop the match. there are 2 way to stop the matchup

1. Tap three times - on the ground or the body of the opponent (this does not have be by your hand, you can also use feet)
2. Saying "Stop" or "Matte" - to verbally quit

How Does DentonBJJ set-up their training?

A regular class involves 30 minutes of warm ups/conditioning drills, 30 minutes of drilling new moves with a partner, and 30 minutes of sparring (grappling).

Sparring (grappling) usually starts with both students facing each other from a kneeling position. This gives students a chance to apply what he/she has learned against an opposing partner.

DentonBJJ Competition Team? is Encouraged

Competition is also encouraged. Competitors are divided by age, belt rank, and weight class. There are time limits, generally five to ten minutes, depending on belt rank and age. Matches start with both competitors standing, and competitors will attempt a take down on their opponent. Competitors will try a submission attempt once the match goes to the ground. The match is over once somebody taps out. If time runs out without a submission, the competitor with the most points is considered the winner.

I have never done martial arts before and I feel a little apprehensive. How easy is it to get started?

Most people feel some anxiety about starting a martial arts program which is why DentonBJJ offers 2 weeks worth of classes to make sure you familiarize yourself with the schools, the instructors and of course to help you feel comfortable with the material you will be learning.

Working from the guard or from your back is hard for everyone even wrestlers. Since they are taught not to goto their back, it is a hard to break when getting started.

Do Injuries happen in Jiu-jitsu?

Yes.
Like any physical activity, injuries do happen. The best way to prevent them is by training under the supervision of a professional and accredited instructor. During your practice, avoid people with large egos and get rid of your own. If you feel uncomfortable working with someone, it is ok to say no. Remember that at each school, people are practicing at different paces and for different reasons so it is important to work with people that have similar motives for training.

I have a Karate / Tae Kwon Do uniform, can I use it?

While you can use it, be aware that a lightweight uniform will likely tear within 2 weeks of practice. A great deal of stress is put on gripping the uniform, which is why Judo and Jiu-Jitsu gis are much heavier than those of striking arts. Gi chokes are also much more painful for a person wearing a lightweight uniform.

Comparison ::
Single Weave jiu-jitsu gi = 6 pounds
Century Tae Kwon Do uniform = < 1 pound

Do you do Katas?

Katas are not done specifically, but we do grappling drills, many of which are found on wrestling mats throughout the world. These skills are the basic skills to help move on the mat, making the second nature.

There are not specific move kadance other then proper technique and use of submissions, reversals, Take downs, and chokes while grappling consistently.

Can I just come and watch?

Absolutely! However, it will be tremendously more fun and informative to take off your shoes and hop on the mat to practice with us. We will always invite you to train with us (yes, even on your first day). We are a fun group... we don't have lots of formalism, so please come, watch, and if you find the spirits willing, partake.

I hear that some martial arts are very strict and heavy into discipline - how strict are you?

You are mature enough to know what is and is not appropriate behavior. As a new student, we do not want you to worry too much about formalities. You will learn what is expected of a student, in terms of behavior, attitude and aptitude with time. We are here to learn and have fun - and that is what we expect of you.

What are some of the physical benefits of training Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu-Jitsu is one of the best overall workouts one can do. Aerobic In addition it improves balance, coordination, cardio vascular capacity, and muscular endurance.

As a beginner the tendency is use more strength, by which being more of an anAerobic workout. As time passes and more technique is taught the amount of strength used is a minium and then becomes Aerobic.
